Strategies for Fostering Self-Regulation in the Classroom

Self-regulation is the ability to manage one's emotions, behaviors, and body movements in response to stimuli, leading to goal-directed actions. As humans, no matter what age we are, we deal with self regulation everyday. How we react, and conversate on a daily basis proves this.

Classroom Strategies:

  1. Mindfulness Practices:

    • Incorporate purposeful activities like deep breathing and guided imagery to help students become aware of and manage their emotions, which is very important as it helps shape how they will act throughout life with problem solving .

  2. Emotion Regulation Techniques:

    • By teaching quality strategies such as counting to ten, using "I feel" statements, and taking breaks to manage emotional responses, it allows the students time to actual consider how the are feeling and how to overcome in a more positive way.

    • Establishing consistent bedtime routines to promote security and a schedule.

    • Responding promptly to cries to build trust, and how you go about handling their emotions.

  • Toddlerhood:

    • We need to provide choices to encourage autonomy, to see how they are handling decision making.

    • Labeling and validating all emotions to enhance emotional understanding builds a bond.

  • Adolescence:

    • Engaging  in open conversations about emotions and experiences, building trust with them as this is a very hard age as they are discovering who they are.

    • Supporting  involvement in extracurricular activities to build social skills, while also allowing them to figure themselves out and what they enjoy.
